Poetry Sound and Sense posting #1

This blog posting is due before class starts Thursday, Dec. 14. Good luck...

In class, we've had a chance to talk about the characteristics of poetry. It can be difficult to pin down and as we've seen with the wikipedia entry, there is no one agreed upon definition. To help you better appreciate the poems we are reading in class, you should be thinking about your own definition. Post it here. How do you define a poem? What makes a poem a poem? Your response should be a well-developed paragraph with mention of specific characteristics as we've seen in the poetry packet.

I define a poem as a collage of thoughts, with certain words put together in a careful way to make sure they have a sort of sing-song-ring to them. A poem has a hidden thought hidden among many literary devices. Poetry expresses thoughts through an emotional stance, and is a short story of feelings.

Poetry: Poetry is a mixture of all different types of different ways of writing. Poetry uses emotion, personal thoughts and feelings, similies, and metaphors. Most poems connect to real life situations. Also, a poem may rhyme. It doesn't always have to rhyme, but writing when you're writing a poem you should make sure you pick words that sound good together. A poem has very descriptive details about the subject being written about. A poem doesn't have a to be complete sentances. While writing a poem you can stop in the middle of sentances and go to the next line. A poem does not have to be full sentances and it does not have to make sense. A poem usually has a hidden message or meaning and you have to figure it out while reading. A poem can be about anything, even if it's not significant.

"Poetry is a doorway to the soul"
-Floria
"Begins in delight and ends in wisdom"
-Samuel Taylor Coleridge
"The universal language"

I believe poetry is a very creative way of writing down a person's emotions and thoughts. It does not only have to be about that, but can be about something that is going on like an event that could be going on throughout the world or in a certain place. It has a rhythm of some sort or a pattern that has words that rhyme and have a deeper meaning than the actual literal meaning of what is being written about. There may be a connection between two or more things with those/ that meaning(s). It may also have symbolism and irony as well as figurative language like any metaphors or simlies. Lastly, poetry can represent not only a person or the entire world, but it can represent a certain culture or group.

I define poetry as a way of expressing oneself using words. The words would be arranged in some sort of pattern that would be unique in its own way. They could be put together to create some sort of rhythm. Or they could also be arranged in a way of stanzas, and or verses. They could also be arranged to form some sort of shape. Poetry would be open for interpretation by anyone willing to read it. I believe that poetry could have a deeper meaning, but they can also be completely pointless.

Poetry is the expression of ones personal feelings about a certain topic, of just about anything. It could even be about a person or animal. It's a persons expression of how they see things

I define poetry as an expression of thoughts written down. The author may put his or her personal feelings into it, and try to make the reader think about what he or she is talking about. When reading a poem, it should make you feel as if the world was spinning around, as if you're floating in space. Good poems should consist of similes, metaphors, and good descriptive details. You should be able to picture it all in your head, understand what is it to be the writer.

To me, poetry is personal thoughts and feelings expressed through art. It includes symbolism, irony, metaphors, similies, good descriptions and rhythm. Poetry should creat a picture in your mind while reading it. Sometimes poetry can rhyme, but doesn't have to all of the time. A poem can be made out of pretty much anything: a certain culture, backround, etc. I believe that a poem is a creative piece of writing that keeps the reader thinking.

Poetry is a way of expressing emotions through words. It uses things such as symbolism and irony. Poetry sometimes has connections with things that weren't known before. Sometimes poems have rhythm or rhyme. Poems are a very descriptive piece of writing that allows the reader to picture what they are reading.

To me, poetry is a "form of art", where the emotion included "must come by nature." The purpose of poetry is to "teach and delight." Some forms of poetry "are specific to particular cultures and genres." I think poetry has a "layer of meanings", meaning that a poem bring out the emotions of someone towards a certain situation or experience. I also think that the usage of similes and metaphors help to make a poem more descriptive. A poem's words usually come deep from inside the person who wrote it.

The usage of symbolism helps also !

I define poetry as a way in which words are thought out in order to tell an emotion or action. Many types of writing styles are included in making poems. Poems can either tell you or describe one main idea/ thought or many. Poems are usually written form the heart and have very deep meanings. Creative poems have many literary terms such as alteration and imagery.

In my own words, i would difine poetry as an artform of the thoughts of a man(or woman) written on paper. In poems, there may be different elements that are shown unlike books or any other types of literature. Examples of these would be common "errors" in grammar such as improper use of capitalization and punctuation. This is what I think a poem is.

Anonymous said...

Poetry is using descriptive phrases to express the authors thoughts or emotions. Poetry uses many forms of figurative language and discription to say things instead of just saying things exactly how they are. The meaning of the poem is deeper then what is exactly written, so you have to think about it to understand what the author is exactly saying through the poem. So what defines a poem, rather then a story, is the meaning or theme being in a sence hidden behind the description rather then it just being said.

Poetry is an author's way of expressing their feelings in words. He or she may use symbolism, where the poem contains a "deeper meaning" and it is up to the reader to decide on what it is. Other literary terms, such as similes, metaphors, alliterations, etc. are usually used in poems as well. Poetry is a form of art, and it is up to the author to decide if their writing is poetry. If the author wants it to be poetry, then it is and no one else can decide that. It is up to the feelings of whoever is writing.

Poetry is a very creative form of art. It usually consists of feelings and emotions being put on paper in a certain form to make the words speak for themselves. Poems usually have a certain structure and contain things such as rhythm, symbolism, and other literary devices. The poet uses their words to show their emotion because they don’t speak their feelings. The poem is a poets’ “silent voice”.

I think that a poem is a different way of writing. A poem has to have personal thoughts and real events. I poem usually tells a story but it doesn't say all the words to explain it, its like the poem gives you clues to figure out what it means. A poem is usually a way of expressing emotion.

To me a poem/poetry is a way of writing that is different from any other. In my opinion poetry includes some type of emotion or feeling. I also think that a poem should have a single subject that it one way or another connects back to. Poems should also have a 'deeper meaning' in my opinion. I think that it should make the reader think beyond the words written on paper. It is also important for a poem to be divers. I think that it should be written in a way that allows a viewing from multiple interpretations. For a poem to attract me, I think that it should also contain some type of rhythm and/or a pattern, whether it is obvious to the reader or not. A poem can be classified in many different ways, but to me it means all of the previous qualities/characteristics.

I feel that poems really just need to be statments that make sense. It has to be something that either you could understand or it has to be something that you can think about. If it was just a bunch of random words that meant nothing, then I would not consider it poetry. However, if I read something that is supposed to be a poem and it makes sense, it gives me something to think about, and it is just a good piece of writing, then I guess it is poetry.

In my opinion, poetry is the grouping of words in a way that integrates emotions with descriptions. I believe that poetry is one of the most ultimate forms of art that can be associated with the use of language and words. My personal choice of effective vehicles for poetic ideas would include symbolism, irony, metaphors, and similes. If I was to sum up poetry in one phrase, I would choose a quote by Samuel Coleridge: "...the best words in the best order."

I think that poetry is the part of literature that is totally different than stories and novels. Poetry is the the most simple and direct means of expressing oneself in the world. It is the precise thing which can be considered as the universal language. It is the perfect combination of the emotion that comes by nature but measure can be acquired by art. I would rather define poem as the "..... most direct and simple means of expressing oneself in world" if I had to define it in one sentence.

To me, poetry is the soul poured out into words and spread across a sheet of paper. It's like a complicated microscope that lets us see into outselves, and lets us see who we are. It is a feeling put into words with some simple and some very diverse and difficult. It is who we percieve ourselves to be, and who we really are, and how we feel. A poet has not achieved true poetry until he or she has invoked emotion from the reader. Like if I were to read a sad poem and felt sad afterwards, the poet would have achieved his goal by sharing his or her emotion with me.

The definition of poetry reminds me in a lot of ways about the definition of, "good literature". I notice that niether term has any one definition that is necessarily correct. I suppose that poems might be considered as a kind of literature, but the qualities like suspense and a good plot line aren't really part of poetry. As far as irony goes, and similies, and metaphors...the definition of good literature and poems can be very similar.
Focusiing more specifically on what a poem is, I would say that it's a creative way of saying what's in your brain, but on paper, while still showing emotion. How do you put emotion on paper? Easy, but not so easy. Similies, metaphors, and irony have already been mentioned, but rhyming and the order and placement of words can also contribute to adding emotion to a 2-D piece of paper. These different characteristics are what makes a poem, a poem.

Poetry to me is a punch of words that flow together to form a personal feeling of an event or thought. A poem has similies, metaphora, and some figurative lanuqge. A poem is an interational language that can be heard and respected by all people who care. From reading the poem packet, I have aqquired a quote from Samual Colirege in which reads, " the best words in the best order." This is very true because sometimes you need to go back and switch words to make them right.

petry is a form of art that can be specific to cultures and/or genres. It expands the literal meaning of words to invoke emotion. Poetry is a speaking picture that uses symbolism, irony and other stylistic elements to create verses. It is used to express emotion in the author.

peotry is very intoresting literature and has to flow. It has to flow like a song. peotry is somthing that don't have to make sence. it just has to be understood.

Anonymous said...

poetry has to flow at all time like in a rythum in a song.the words have to rhyme and have to make a picture in your head while your reading it so it like you are there.

I think poetry is a form of art using language. Poetry finds deeper meanings with each word or phrase and brings out alot of emotion. A poem also has multiple interpretations to the reader. There has to be rhythm and expression. Most poems have wisdom abd bring delight. You can usually find alot of soul and closeness in a poem.

I think poetrty says the way things really are but just in a different way. Poetry makes you think more about what the poem is trying to get across to you. Also I think that poetry has to have symbolism and irony in it

Anonymous said...

I think poetry is a way to get feelings across without saying it directly. It tells you through things like similes, metaphors, figurative language, and other poetic devices. A lot of the time the poem may only make sense to the author, so sometimes its harder to get the meaning out of it.

My definition of poetry is Words or thoughts that are put together by a person and arn't in prose form. It doesnt have to make sense and it can be about anything. It can rhyme but it doesn't have to. A poem can have multiple meanings or no meaning at all. The poem will in most cases mean the most to the author. I think that an example of a poem not meaning anything to a reader but to the auther is "The red Wheelbarrow" by William Carlos Williams. That poem didn't reallyt make any sense to me or have any meaning, but to the author it probably has some meaning.

The definition of poetry can be interpreted in many different ways. To me, poetry is a form of art that is a concentration of emotional or sensual responses in verse. It uses different ways to convey the message such as assonance, alliteration, and rhythm to achieve musical or in cantor effects. It is emotion put into measure that begins in delight and ends in wisdom. It is often known as "The universal language," and is a speaking picture that is felt emotionally and physically.

Poetry is a form of art that is borrowed styles, techniques and forms from different cultures and languages. Most poetry emphasized aesthetics of fundamental creative act using language. Poetry expand the literal meaning of the words, or to invoke emotional or sensual responses. Most consist of assonance, alliteration and rhythm. Poems are mostly left open to multiple interpretations because of the use of ambiguity, symbolism, irony and other stylistic element of poetic diction.

I feel that poetry is a form of art. A poem has similies, metaphora, and some figurative lanuge. Poetry has a deeper meaning and can be interpreted in many different ways. Poetry is something that is written with feeling and emotion. Poetry can be very descriptive or very vague. The author normally uses poetry to tell a story or to get a point passed.

Poetry is a form of art. Often uses certain forms to expand the meaning of the words. Some forms of poetry come from specific generations and cultures. Poems should be written out and be open to multiple interpretations. Poets borrow styles and forms from diffrent cultures and languages now a days.

Poetry to me is a "deeper meaning". Poetry is all different forms of good description that can either rhyme or just mean something from all different angles. Poetry has many styles and different meanings. A poem is a certain type of language that is not spoke but written and when read the poem there is all different interpertaions of the poem. A poem is not a story but a bunch of detailed descriptive lines. I find in poetry the most unual meanings.

Anonymous said...

Poetry is the art of making words have ostensible meaning. It is a way for the author to express himself. It has to “flow” and sound good. If one word is out of place it could ruin the whole poem. It should have a hold upon reality and be a speaking picture. It needs to have some sort of rhyme, rhythm, or form.

Anonymous said...

Poetry is a story of expression that the poet writes. Whether it be a true story or fictional, there is always emotion shown; symbolically or in plain view. Poetry can paint a picture in your head, just like a novel or a short story. And a painting is a poem.

Anonymous said...

Poetry to me is a responsible attempt to understand the world in human terms through literary composition. It expresses peoples feelings and emotions and put it into a way someone can relate to. Its like taking things that dont mean much and useing it to mean something big and understanding

Anonymous said...

Poetry, in my opinion, is feelings, emotions, and language expressed through words. Poems can contain rhythm, or specific literary qualities like alliteration, consonance, or assonance. Generally, powerful adjectives are included to spice up the poem and make it seem more effective. Yet, it does not have to contain any of these things. It is an entirely custom and free-verse type of writing that can have a strict structure or even none at all. It depends mainly on how the author desires to express his feelings.

Anonymous said...

I think that poetry is the combination of words that are put together in a way that makes it rhyme or have rhythm. It should also portray an image or feeling using descriptive words. Alliteration, assonance, consonance can also be a good thing to use in poetry to enhance the way the sentences sound and flow. It doesn't always have to make sense, but the reader should be able to have a picture in his/her head of whatever the author is trying to describe through the poem.

I think that poetry is a grouping of meaningful words in an order that has some significance. It can use tools to describe things such as similies and metaphors. Poems usually have a deeper meaning than what is written. Poetry uses a lot fo symbolism and describe objects in a different way. Poetry also gives the reader a picture in their head of what is going on, usually through the use of adjectives, similies, metaphors, or symbols.

I think that poetry is a series of words and phrases which combined together can make sence. A characteristic that i look for in a poem would be that when I read it a picture or image pops into my head where I feel like i am in the middle of the scene. Another good thing that a poem should include would be some sort of similes and or metaphores because to me, that is what pulls a poem together.

Anonymous said...

I think that poetry is a whole bunch of phrases put together to rhyme. It doesn't always make sense put has great depth and talks about the, "you're topic" clearly and can have any kind of punctuation you think "it needs". It sometimes forms a shape or picture (of what your talking about), explained or described in the poem. Also, I think that a poem should include similies and metaphors because I think that makes a poem MORE interesting.

I think that poetry is a type of "coding" where the author can put his or her emotions down knowing that the reading won't know exactly what he or she is getting at. It was the start of many music genres like rap, hip hop, ect. Poetry can create abstract pictures in your head and make you think of a clear interpretation of the poem. That is my definition.

I believe that poetry is a description, it can be a description of anything. It always leaves room for the readers interpretation. The author should be able to allow the reader a great visual or emotion on what is taking place. I believe that any good piece of literature should contain layers and deeper meanings and that doesn’t exclude poetry. I strongly believe that poetry is felt rather then read.
