Who made a tougher decision?

This response is due before class starts Friday, Sept. 26

We've read about Jerry's swim through the tunnel, Millicent's personal initiation, and Michael's moustache.

The question for today is this: Which of the three characters do you respect the most for what they did? Select one of the characters and explain your decision using references to specific events in the short story.

I repect Millicent from the story Initiation the most because she was wanted to get in a group with popular people. As the story goes on she realises that you dont have to be in a group to have friends. So she ended up not joining the group.

I respect Jerry the most because he made the decision to be brave and persistent. He kept on trying to swim down through the tunnel until he finally did it. He needed to prove to himself that he could do it even though he could've died.

The one i respect the most is Millicent, because in the begining of the story she wanted to join the sorority and wanted to fit in and be popular. Towards the end she realizes that joining a group or doing somthing special just to fit in or be part of the so called "popular" group. Then she does'nt join because of that and she knows that she is her own special person and you don't have to do anything to prove that.

i respect Millicent the most because she was smart enough to realize towards the end of the story that being in a sorority isnt all that great if you have to change who you are just to be in it, and follow certain rules to stay in it.

I respect Millicent the most because it took alot for her to realize that she didn't need the sorority to fit in. It was something that was very important to her and once she figure out she didn't need, that was a big change for her. She realized she doesn't have to change who she is for a group, and that she's perfectly fine being herself.

I thought all of the characters made brave decisions. I respect Millicent more because she was in a really tough place. She could have joined the sorority and been in a group with a popular girls. Later on she realized that it wasn't worth proving that she can be in it when she knows that she doesn't have to change or do anything to be a "special" person. She made the right decision to get her friends trust.

I thought Millicent was the bravest out of all. She Wanted to get into a sorority very badly and was willing to embaress herself and change just so she can make this happen. Later on she discovered that there was no reason for her to change and she was happy the way she was with out being popular and belonging to a sorority.

I respect Mike the most because he helped find himself through the short story. He wanted become older by growing the moustache and didn't want to shave it even though his friends and family wanted him to. At the end however he ended up shaving it off because he realized he should just stay himself while it lasted. I respect him the most for finding himself even though others wanted him to change, becasue he did it in his own time. I think he realized it mostly when he was with his grandmother and she was halusonating.

I think Millicent had the hardest decision out of all the characters, so i respect her the most. In the beggining of the book she wanted to be in the Sorority and fit in so badly. She would do anything so they would except her. But in the end after seeing how the girls really acted she denied the invite. She finally reliezed you dont have to be cool to fit in . This took a lot of courage to do .

I respect Millicent mostly because of the reason that she used good judgment and was not the stuck up jerk to her regular friends. She could have hung out with the popular people but she turned that down to be with the people she belongs with.

I respect Millicent the most because she had the guts to tell the sorority that she wasn't joining. She also stuck with her true friend in the end and didn't turn into a popular girl when she had the chance. She is very brave for doing so and that is why I think she is the most respected.

I respect Millicent the most because her decision was the hardest. If she didn't change her mind, she would have definitly been in the sorority, but she decided not to. She felt bad that Tracy didn't get in, so she decided to stay with her. She even went through all the embarassing acts in the initiation, and still decided not to do it.

I respect Millicent the most because she turned down the sorority's offer to be one of them. She realized that being friends with them wouldn't make her a better or happier person. She knew that turning down the offer would cause problems but she would rather be herself and not fit in than pretend to be someone she wasn't and hangout with the cool people.

I picked Jerry from though the tunnel. Becouse he wante dto do something and he stuck to it. Like when he first saw the tunnel. Then he tried and treid till he thought he was ready for his journey. Then it explainted when he was on the dock about to jump in and that he was second thinking all this but he new that he had to do it now so he did. And thats why i respect Jerry from all the others.

I respect Millicent the most because she wanted to get in the sorority badly even if it meant embarrassing herself and in the end she turned down the sorority's offer to become one of them, she could have joined the sorority and become popular but she didn't. She realized all she needed was to be was herself and not be something that she wasn't. She finally realized she didn't need to become popular to get her somewhere in life.

After reading all the stories, I respect Millicent the most. She went through the hardest decision in my mind. Millicent would have pretty much have been automatically accepted into the sorority after being asked to join. Her decision to not join was hard because she went through all of the embarrassing and demoralizing hazing, like having to clean her big sisters room and being called gopher, to realize that she did not need the sorority to be accepted and that you have to be open to other people. She learned that being open to others from the man who talked about the heather birds on the bus. Also, she learned to always stay postive in any situation after speaking with her friend Tracy. Millicent did not want to lose her friend Tracy nor did she want to lose her self in the sorority. She realized that she did not need the sorority to be accepted and that just by being herself she was liked. This may have come from the popular guy reassuring her about how she was doing and calling her attractive. Millicent is resepcted the most by me because of the change she went through and the toughness of the decision she made.

I respect Millicent the most because the decision she had to make was the hardest. The reason why she had to make one of the hasrdest decisions was because if she hadn't changed her mind, she would have been in the sorority. But she decided not to. She felt very bad that Tracy didn't get in, so she decided to stay with her. Even though she went through some very embarassing acts in the initiation, she still did'nt do it. This was a very hard decition for her.

I respect mike the most. when he sees the his grandmothers mental condition obtained from advanced age, he starts to understand that growing up isnt exactly great.

If his grandmothers become deluded enough to honestly believe that her husband returned from the dead, then shes in the postion to believe anything.

But as mikes mother pointed out, she has moments of clarity.
it was only a matter of time before she discovered how horribly wrong she was.

Mike shaved his moustache to help his grandma avoid such memories of lament. it shows how selfless hes becoming. Its the act of shaving the moustache, not keeping it, which demonstrates his Maturity.

I respect Millicent the most because she had a harder decision to make and she made the best one. Most people would join the sorority, but Millicent decided to be with Tracy instead, even though she had already gone through the initiation to get in.

I respect Millicent the most because she's making a dicision that has to do with choosing her friends or a new group that bosses her around. She does everything she's told but in the end hopes that she might be able to be friends with both her friends before the Sorority and after by choosing not to be part of the Sorority.

The character that I chose is Jerry. I respect him because he had a fear about going through the tunnel, but he did it. I respect that he believes in himself that he can do it. I respect him to make sure that everytime he looks over his mom is OK because he cares about her. When he got a bloody nose he still went through the tunnel.

Out of all of the characters, I respect Millicent the most. My rezpect for her is because she had the heart and the courage to say no. We had to endure the hazing that the Soroaty girls pushed on them. She, in the middle of the story wanted this really bad and in a way, was being sucked into a life of everything having to be the same and a constant path of following when she in fact wanted to lead all along. When she met the man on the bus she finally realized that it is ok to be different and still be happy at the same time, and she built up the courage to lead and say no.

I respect Jerry's decision because it shows that Jerry can do what ever he put his mind to doing. He put himself in danger just to see if he can do it. Since he did that I'm sure he thinks he can do anything. This made him stronger and now he is not scared of anything. Nothing will fear him for the rest of his life. If he could go through a tunnel under water and hold his breath for 2 mintues. I'm sure he can do other more intersecting thing in this world. This is the person I think that did the best dicisions. For doing that it will help him in the furture.

i respect millicent the most out of the three becasue for a girl to pass up a chance for popularity like that is probabaly one of the hardest things to do when you are that close to haveing it. Not ta the choices that micheal and jerry made werent hard, but i thik that more people would hve been able to make the same choice, but as for millicent i dont think that everyone would be able to make that choice.

I respect Mike te most because he did what he did when he went to see his grandmother and did not say anything to her that he is her grandson and not her husband. i respect him the most because i rember when i went to go see my great grandmother in one of those places. she did reconize me, but i did not want to go like he did not want to go in the beginning.

I think that Millicent made the hardest decision. She decided not to join the sorority after she went through initiation. The popular decision would have been to join the sorority, but she took the road less traveled and decided that her old friends were more important.

Out of every story I read the one person I respected Millicent the most because she turned down the one this that would give her popularity. She put asside peer pressure and went with her heart knowing that she didn't have to follow the crowd and she could be the person she wants to be while still having fun and being happy.

After reading all three of the stories the character I respect most is Millicent, she had put herself through so much before denying her invitation into the sorority. How at one point had looked at one of her friends and said to herself that she wasn’t going to be accepted but ended up rejecting herself from the group. Finally at the end of the story how she had taught herself that she didn’t need to be accepted by others to know that she is accepted by herself.

The characte that I respect the most would be Mellicent because it had to take a lot of courage to let go to something that you put 100 persent into. She was put to clean and do many other anbrasing things. Entering to this sorority seemed so important for her and many other girls and to let it go is challenging.

The character that i respect the most is Millicent. She made a smart choice not joining the sorority even though she had already made it in the sorority. Millcent had to make a tough decision and she decided to stay and be with Tracy. For her to turn down the sorority was very tought, and I respect that very much.

The character i respect most is Mike. I respect Mikes becuase of his choce to shave off his moustache. His choice of shaving it off showed that he finally realized what his mother was saying when she said to shave it off. He wasnt ready for the responsibility was basically saying that he wasnt ready to be a man yet.
