Finalizing our F14 laptop policy

This assignment is due Monday, Sept. 24 before class starts.

Earlier this month, all of you contributed ideas about how we should best utilize our laptops in F14. I've had a chance to read your responses, and now I want you to take a second look at what your classmates wrote.

Begin by reading through your classmates' comments from Getting Started with Classroom Laptops. Our goal will be to generate a list of guidelines that will help make our use of laptops a rewarding experience. Your assignment is to select the best ideas from your classmates. Write your answer in the comment section of this posting, and please use the following guidelines.

  • First, complete this sentence stem. "I really liked the comment(s) from _________________ because... (Note at least two)"

  • Next, finish this sentence stem. "The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three)..."
Remember, no last names. Put your own first name, last initial, and class period on the posting to earn credit.

I like the comment from Dom because he mentioned both good and bad aspects of using laptops in class and that they could be distracting but that could be reduced through different security measures. I also liked Thanh's comment because he made the points that it is easier to type than to hand write everything and that not everyone has a computer with internet access at home.

The following guidelines should become part of our laptop etiquette policy in F14: computers should only be used for classwork, students should treat computers as if they were their own because they are expensive, and the teacher should monitor what students are doing on the computer during class.

i like joshs comment beacuse i also feel that laptops can be god or bad at the same time and it can be an easy problem to fix.

The guidlines for the laptops should be that they can only be used for school work, typing papers, or doin reserch online.

I really like the comment from Kristina, Period 4, about how having the laptops make it so much quicker and easier for us to proofread and edit our papers. Spell check will pick up on our spelling and grammar mistakes, and it is so easy to rearrange, delete, and add things. I like the comment from Chelsea, Period 4. She added that we are now able to see the work of our classmates all in one spot. This allows us to compare our writing and communicate in a different and exciting way. Finally, I agree with Colin’s ideas about taking good care of the laptops. He said that we should treat them gently, as if they were our own.

The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. Students can use their laptops only for English 10 class assignments.
2. Students must respect the laptops and are responsible for any damage that is done to them.
3. I also suggest that the teachers walk around the classroom every now and then to make sure that students are following the rules.

I really liked the comment made by Colleen, period 4. She had some really good points. She mentioned that most kids write better when they can just sit there and write, rewrite, and delete. I know that is how I learn to write better. Also, she said how it was easier to use laptops because most of the computers in the computer lab are broken or vandalized, which is true. I also liked the comment from Mike K., period 6. He said that there will always be kids who misuse the laptops, which is true. But, it should be the teachers job to make sure there is nothing inappropriate going on the laptop. I agree with that. If teachers are going to be giving us the privilege to use laptops, they should check them out to make sure we are using them correctly.

The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. The laptops can only be used in the classroom and are not permitted to leave the room.
2. The teacher should do monthly laptop checks to make sure nothing inappropriate is on the laptop.
3. Any student caught vandalizing, breaking, or using the laptop inappropriately should have to pay for the damages or be suspended from the laptop for 1 month.

I really liked the comment from Kristina, per. 4 because she mentioned how it's much easier to go back and edit work on a laptop. Otherwise, we would have to re-write our entire written papers. I also like the comment made by Colleen, per. 4 because she said that kids find it easier to type the essay right away instead of having to write it by hand first. I agree with this statement.

The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:Computers should be used for classwork and assignments only, students shouldn't cause any damage to the laptops and treat them with care, and teachers should walk around occasionally during class to see if the students are doing what they're supposed to be.

I like the comment from Kristina, period 4. That the laptops can really help us understand what were reading and typing and help us proof read what were doing with the tools on Microsoft word co correct the mistakes.

The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. Students must respect the laptops and care for them as if they were their own.
2. Students must not and will not access internet content that is not related to the assignment given to them.
3. Students must not and will not access internet content that violates the rules laid down in The Guide. This includes, but is not limited to, content of a pornographic nature, content promoting criminal behavior, or content deriding groups of people, such as racist or homophobic content.

I like what Kristina in period 4 said because she said that the laptops would be useful to read articles that are online and the tools on word will help us improve our writing.

The following guidelines should becmome part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. Be responsible and take care of the computar.
2. Do only what you are told to do and don't go on websites you're not supposed to.
3. Teachers should walk around and check to see if you are doing what you are supposed to.

I liked the comment made by Lindsay, period 4, because she talks about problems with using laptops, and solutions to those problems.

I think the following points should be added to our laptop etiquette policy.

• Students should not use the laptops for means other than those assigned by the teacher.
• Do not vandalize the computers.
• The teacher should walk around and check everyone to ensure that people are not going off topic.

I really liked the comments from kristina period 4 becuase we should be using the laptops for typing papers and doing research.

The following guidelines should becmome part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. Students are to use the laptops only when asked or when needed.
2. The laptops will only be used for school related work or research.
3. Students who abuse the laptops or damage them should pay for the damage or not be able to use them for a certain amount of time.

I liked the comment from Jordan because it was very true for most kids. She said that the laptops will be very useful in class for taking notes and writing essays since most students have the ability to type faster then they can write. I also like the comment from Lindsay Per. 4 because she mentioned that the laptops should not be vandalism and using the laptops responsibly. That is very important. Students need to respect the laptops.

The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. only use the laptops for english class assignments.
2. do not vandalize the laptops and use them responsibly.
3. teachers should supervise the work being done on the laptops.

I really liked the comment from Macy period 4 because she listed some very important points. She said that we are entering a time when computers are going to be very important so we should learn how to use them in school. She also said that we have to be responsible with them or the privilege should be taken away. She said that there should be certain rules on what you can and can not do with them.
The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1.) When you use laptops in the classroom, stay on task, don’t visit sites you aren’t supposed to and don’t play games.
2.) Respect the computers, don’t vandalize them so you can’t use them again
3.) There should be a penalty for students misusing the laptops.

I really liked the comment from Colin because he gave suggestions on how to better use the laptops and how to take better care for them so we dont damage them.
The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: Laptops will only be used in F14. Laptops will be used for work only. Laptops will be taken away from a student if missused.

I really liked the comment from Linsay because she mentioned how we should have access to the laptops so as long as we don't use them inappropriately, and how students may be able to finish homework where a laptop's necessary in class.

The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:

1. Laptops should only be used as instructed by the teacher.
2. Vandalism should result in immediate prohibition of laptop use for a given period of time and fines for reparations.
3. Constant surveillance should be implemented for laptop preservation.

i liked Maria's comment because i feel the same way about how the laptops should be used and how they shouldnt be used and i feel that with the right supervison they can be put tp proper use. I also agree with dave's comment because i also agree with how he feels bout how we get a better learning experence using the laptops and how you can learn easier and quicker.

The following guidlines that shoud be used for the laptop policy: they should only be used when they are needed, no games should be played, no intest messinging should be allowed, and there should be no touching anyone elses computer.

I agree with what Macy said. She talked about how laptops are a useful tool and how it makes everything easier. She also talked about how getting side tracked is a very easy thing to do. I completely agree with her. When I am on the computer at home doing work I get side tracked all the time. I also agree with what Theresa. If students did use their time wisely on the computer then a lot more work could get done or you would have less homework.

The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14
1) Laptops should only be used when a teacher gives permission
2) Laptop use should be monitored by the teacher during class to make sure students are on task
3) Vandalism and anything that is broken should be reported right away

I agree with what Macy said because it is true that laptops make learning a lot easier, but we should not take them for granted. I also agree with Kevin in taking the necessary steps to stay on task with the laptops because it is so tempting to do other things. Most of the people think that laptops are a good idea as long as guidelines are made and set by the students, and I completely agree. As long as these laptops are not taken for granted, they are a great piece of technology that can be taken advantage of in any classroom.

The following guidelines are a good idea for laptop etiquette policy in room F14.
Rule #1, under no circumstances may a student stray from the task they were given by their teachers. If they do they are given a warning, and if a second offense occurs they may not be able to use the laptops in class.
Rule #2, the laptops should be treated with respect and care. There can be no tinkering with the hard drive and no keys on the keyboard should be taken out. If an offense like this occurs then the student will be accepted to pay for the damages and may get their laptop privileges revoked.
Rule #3, under no circumstances may a student use their access to the internet to play games, download pornographic images, or rude or abusive sites. Students should use the internet purely for research on the topic they happen to be studying. If a student breaks this rule then it will most likely lead to a suspension for computer usage throughout the whole school, and may not be able to have access to F14 laptops ever again.

I really liked the comment from Theresa. She said that having the laptop in class can get things done faster and easier because most kids type faster than they write. We can research relevant topics to whatever we’re learning about whenever we want to. We can get assignments done quicker and it wouldn't take us long time to find the information. I also agree with what Sean said. Laptop can be a easier way for teachers and students to interact on important topics discussed in class. Also, the laptop will spell check our writing and help us correct our grammar mistakes. That is something writing on paper can't so for us. I agree with Jess that we can save papers if we work on laptop. Instead of having to print the articles by all students, we could just go online and look them up.

The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. Student should ONLY use laptops when they are assigned by the teacher.
2. Students cannot use the laptop when there is substitute teacher in class.
3. Students can only use their assigned laptop.
4. Students can only look up the information that is related to what's being discussed.
5. Teachers should keep an eye on what students are doing time to time and ask them what they got done in that time.
6. If the student vandalize the laptop, they can no longer use the laptop in class.

I really liked the comments from Colin p.4, I think students should not eat or drink while the computers are out, I also agree that they are extremly helpful for typing skills. Theresa p.4 also had some good ideas; there should be someone monitoring the computers to make sure we aren't fooling around and certain programs definitly should be blocked from the system completly(Myspace, Facebook, etc..)

The following guildlines should become part of our Labtop Ediquette Policy in F14:

1. No going on any programs that aren't apart of your assignment.
2. Be responsible, don't damage the labtops, switching the keys, eating food around them.
3. Teachers should do routine checks to make sure everyone is focused and on task.

I really liked the comment from Andrew because he said that we can use the laptops to learn how to use new programs. We will need to know how to use these programs as technology becomes more important in our society. I also liked the comment from Jess because she pointed out that some students don't have a computer at home or don't have time after school to stay and use the computers here. The laptops are helpful so that students can get their work done in class.

The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. No one is allowed to go on inappropriate sites while using the laptops in class.
2. If anyone damages their laptop, they will be suspended from using them for 1 month.
3. The teacher should walk around the room during use of the laptops to make sure the students are doing what they're supposed to.

I really liked the comments from Dave, Lindsay, and Chelsea. Dave mentioned that not only do the laptops give us the opportunity to learn more about what we doing in class, but it gives us the chance of learning it quicker and easier. I agree with Dave because the laptops can expand our knowledge and make more time for it as well. Lindsay said if the students don't show that they can use the laptops properly, then their right to use them may be taken away. i agree with this statement because you giving the classroom a lot of responsibility and need to trust them in order to follow guidelines. Finally Chelsea mentions that technology is a huge part of our world and it is such a good idea and learning experience to be able to use laptops. I also agree with her because more and moe years will pass and then are going to come up with new technology ideas to make it easier and faster to do work.

The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:

1.Laptops should be used under a supervised teacher and for work related business only.
2. Laptops should be handled in a careful manner and never be tossed or thrown around.
3.The laptops are a privilege and should be used with a purpose never for inappropriate or un related school work.

I really like the comments made by Colin P.4 and Pat P.6. I think they both have very good points on the rules that should exist for the computers being used in F14. They pretty much cover the basic, common sense things that you should follow when using the laptops. I also like the idea that food should not be eaten in the presence of the laptops and that the laptops can only be used with teacher permission.

The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:

 Only use the laptops when assigned to and/or when given permission by the teacher.
 The laptops should only be used for school related work such as papers, projects, blogging, or research unless instructed otherwise by the teacher.
 Food, drinks, snacks; ECT…should not be consumed when using the laptops.
 Vandalism to the laptops will be grounds for punishment as decided by the teacher.

I really liked the comment that Linsay, Period 4 wrote. She said that we shouldn't be using the laptops to email friends or download music. She also said t hat the teachers need to let us put the laptops to good use, and if we show that we aren't responsible enough to use them, that they will no longer be an option for us to use.
I agree with what Dave Period 4 said. He said that with the laptops we have the opportunity to learn even more about what we are learning. He said that we should only be allowed to work on the assingments for the day while we are on the laptops.
I also agree with what Kristina said. She said that it will be much easier to do writing and reports on the laptops because it will make it easier for us to go back and make corrections. She said that we should only use the Internet when we are told to,so that we don't look at our emails or play games.

The following guidelines should be added to the use of laptops in Mr. Miller's room :

1. If we abuse the use of the laptops, we will no longer have access to them.

2.We should only be allowed to work on the assingments for the day while we are on the laptops.

3.We should only use the Internet when we are told to,so that we don't look at our emails or play games.

I really like the comment made by Linsay, period four. She said that we
shouldn't be using the labtops to email friends or download music. She
said that the teachers need to let us use our labtops sufficiently and
use them towards our own benefits. Another concept that she mentioned
was the fact that no one should be using the labtops to email friends,
download music, or play games. We all need to show that we're
responsible enough to use them and need to keep up the responsibility
to
maintain the use of the labtop.
I agree with Kristina as well. She said that it will be much easier to
complete writting assignments especially making it more easy to make
corrections and use up that Revision Policy to the best of our
ability.
She said the proper use of the labtop would be to only use certain,
specified programs when told to out of respect of this priveladge and
our
teacher.

Here are some rules for our labtop policy:

1. Only use the labtop when told to, or necessary.
2. Don't fool around by playing games, emailing friends, and
downloading music.
3. Work dilligently showing our appreciation for this priveledge.
4. Don't go on inappropiate websites.
5. Take care of your labtop and make sure you don't do anything on it
to cause viruses.
