Midsummer Post #2: Shakespeare and sitcoms

This is the second Midsummer post and is due before class starts on Wednesday, March 28.

A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedy, which is something that today's television viewers should know a little something about.

According to Scholastic Scope magazine, Shakespeare wrote about three kinds of classic mix-ups: 1) mistaken identity, 2) love triangles, and 3) strange coincidences. Each of these classic mix-ups are staples on 21st Century sitcoms. The next time you watch your favorite sitcom or re-run, look for one of those classic mix-ups involving the characters.

For your assignment, select one (1) of the classic mix-ups from above and find an example of it from a popular sitcom you watch. First, describe the mix-up from the sitcom, and then explain how the humor of the mixed-up situation helps increase your enjoyment and appreciation of the show. What makes it funny?

As with all of these assignments, it is a good practice to write your response in a word processing program like Microsoft Word so you can better edit and proofread your entry before submitting it. It also makes sense to save a copy of your response in case you have problems posting.

One kind of classical mix-up that is found the 21st century sitcom, Seinfeld, is that there are strange coincidences. One strange coincidence starts off when Kenny Roger's Roasters opens up for business in the neighborhood with a large neon chicken sign that beams into Kramer's apartment. Also, Elaine uses a huge amount of money out of her job's (Peterman's) expense account, including a big hat for George which he purposely leaves at a woman's apartment to try and come back to get it another day and get a second date with her. While this is happening, Jerry meets an old friend from college, but gets him fired by getting him not to go to work, but he ends up getting a job as manager of Kenny Roger's Roasters. After Kramer can no longer take it any more with the sign, he switches apartments with Jerry, but the thing is that Jerry's friend, the manager at the chicken place, has made Kramer fall in love with the chicken after he was always complaining about it and going crazy. Once Jerry finds out that Kramer loves the chicken, he demands to switch back apartments. Meanwhile, Elaine tries to fix what she has already done wrong and needs the hat back from George, but she can't get it back. Jerry's friend also sells fake hats, the kind that they need, but it doesn't help Elaine. that is when she goes out of the country to find Peterman to see if her expenses can be allowed. While she is still out of the country, George is still trying to get the second date. The strange coincidence of this all happening is how the hat impacts the business of the chicken, and also how Kramer, the one who could not stand Kenny Roger's Roasters, ended up loving their chicken. This helps my enjoyment and appreciation of the show because it shows how two very different things can impact each other and how people’s actions are able to impact other people’s actions as shown in this example of strange coincidences. The funny thing is that you wouldn’t think that two things contrasted so much can become so similar to each other and affect each other’s outcome.

One show that I watch is one tree hill. It has an intense love triangle mix-up between Payton, Lucas, and Brooke. Payton and Brooke have been best friends forever, and when Brooke and Lucas were dating, Payton discovered that she had feelings for him. Brooke and Lucas eventually break up and Payton and Lucas find out that the both love each other more than anything. Throughout this whole mixed up love triangle there are fights and make ups and more fights. This love triangle helps for my enjoyment because it is amusing to see people fight over things that sometimes aren’t even true, or the real case. Brooke is more of a fighter then Payton, and Brooke tends to blow things out of proportion. Brooke is a bit of a drama queen with things, and once she hears something she goes off with it and believes it rather then talking to the person. Seeing her be wrong about things was funny for me to watch as well because it’s so great when the ‘bad-guy’ gets caught being wrong and feeling like an idiot.

I watch a show called "Northern Exposure." This show not only deals with love triangles, but also strange coincidences. The story is set in a town called Sicily, Alaska and the love triangles are between a young doctor, Joel Fleishman, and his fiancée in New York, and a bush pilot, Maggie. There is also a love triangle between two older men, Hollings and Stevens, a bear hunter and astronaut, for the love of a young supermodel that got lost after she ran away when she was about 17. The other strange coincidences plus these strange love triangles make this show very funny and enjoyable to watch. The strange characters and the setting in which they live enhance these love triangles and coincidences, making the show one of my favorites to watch.

One show that I watch is called Gilmore Girls. This show portrays one large love triangle. One of the main characters’s of the show, Lorelei, is first in love with a man named Christopher, and ends up having a baby with him at only 16 years old. Now that she is all grown up and is a single parent raising her daughter, she struggles to realize who she truly loves. Luke, the owner of a diner nearby, has always loved Lorelei, but Lorelei has always seemed to go back to her first love; Christopher. In the recent new episodes, Lorelei, after being engaged to Luke and then breaking up, becomes involved with Christopher once again. They become engaged, but still, Lorelei feels emptiness inside of her. Christopher tells Lorelei that she still loves Luke, but she denies everything he says. Finally, Christopher and Lorelei are not engaged anymore, because Lorelei finally has come to the conclusion that she still has feelings for Luke. This love triangle is interesting and humorous because Christopher and Luke are two very different people. Although Christopher will always love Lorelei, he seems to have changed throughout these past episodes. What mattered to him in the past is no longer mattering to him now. But because he was her first love, Lorelei always seemed to fall back with him. Luke, on the other hand, is a man who also had a child, but he did not know about his daughter. He, like Lorelei, is a man who does not like change in his life. Although Lorelei might deny this, she indeed, fears change in her life too. This love comedy shows how someone can struggle to find him or her self, in the twisted coincidences and situations of life.

One show that I watch is The OC. It has love-triangles between Seth, Summer, and Anna. Also in the beginning, between Ryan, Luke, Marissa. In the beginning of the show Luke and Marissa date. They have been dating since like 5th grade. When Ryan moves to town Marissa suddenly realizes that she has feelings for him. This causes problems between Luke and Ryan. Ryan and Seth are best friends, and Seth likes a girl named Summer. Summer doesn't even know who Seth is. Seth finally introduces himself, and they become friends. As Summer starts having feelings for Seth, a girl named Anna came into the show. She started to like Seth, who liked Summer. As the show goes on Seth realizes that Anna is the girl he really likes. After they date for a while, Summer and Seth realize they're meant for eachother and they start dating. Since Marissa and Summer are best friends, and Ryan and Seth are best friends, they all become inseperable. This show was very entertaining to me because something was always going on between the main characters. Things in the show sometimes get a little ridiculous, but I still love it. It's a great show because the characters are so like-able. Seth and Summer are my favorite characters because they are funny.

Midsummer Post # 2 March 28

The classic mix-up that I chose was #2 love triangles. I found an example of this classic mix-up on the sitcom Seinfeld. In that episode George Costanza is trying to dump his girlfriend. It takes a while, and with the help of his friend Jerry Seinfeld, to get the job done. After that is over Jerry starts talking to her. Shortly after they start going on dates with each other. Jerry felt very weird about it and kept it from George. But after he finally told him George ended up not caring. At the end of the episode she ends their relationship because she didn’t like his comedy act. I thought that this was a pretty funny episode to watch. The “love triangle” that went between Jerry and George was very ironic. Seeing that made me laugh and I watched it till the end. The mixed-up situation grabbed my attention and I thought that it was pretty comical as well.

A Classical sitcome from the 21st century to me is The Hills. It is a show about a bunch of teenage guys and girls living in LA. The show describes their everyday lives and their relationships that they come across while living in LA. A girl name lauren meets this guy brody after breaking up from a long relationship with this boy jason. It has been very hard for lauren to move on and start dating new people so this brody boy was important to her. After telling her friend jen about the guy she was seeing, on jens birthday laurens best friend hedi, jenn, brody, and spencer all went out on a date together for jens birthday. Jen just so happens to hook up with Brody. Lauren soon finds out she confronts jen about the situation for jen unfortunately lies straight to laurens face. As for Brody jen ment absolutley nothing to him and he really likes lauren. The show gets more and more interesting every episode because of the way your freinds and guys friends can back stab you in every way possible, then use any excuse in the book to cover for yourself. Even if it means lieing to your best friend.

A classical sitcom that revealed this humor of mistaken identity was "Malcolm in the Middle." In this episode, the father was mistaken by a new empoloye to be the boss and ends up pretending to be the boss for several hours. Finally, his wife tells him to sort out the mess, and to tell the new guy the truth. But, the father thinks that this would be embarrasing since he was playing this role all day. In the end, instead of tellin the new theguy the truth, he pretends to have the authority and fires hime. This was a comical way of solving the problem.
To me, this was a very comical show becuase it kept the watcher insterested in the characters every move. It made the situtaion funny becasue the viewer and one of the the characters new something that the other didnt. This made me think of how the father was going to solve his problem.

One sitcom that I find hilarious is That 70’s Show. There are a lot of love triangles and mix ups in that show. At first Eric is in love with Donna, and all his friends know it. But his best friend Hyde also secretly likes Donna. When it was her birthday Eric gave her, her favorite perfume. However, Hyde got Donna a framed picture of him and her together in the 3rd grade (or something like that). There’s also the foreign kid named Fez, who is also in love with Donna. But, he is also in love with Kelso’s girlfriend Jackie. But, Kelso doesn’t care because he’s not exactly the outstanding student, and he cheats on Jackie all the time. What makes all of this funny is the fact that Eric was completely clueless, and Hyde makes his best friend look dumb in front of the girl they both liked. What makes it even funnier is Fez and Kelso. They’re the most comical characters who just say the funniest and most random things, and are completely clueless about everything. Also by having such exaggerated situations, it just made it more melodramatic and humorous.

One kind of classical mix-up that is found the 21st century sitcom, The Hills, is that there are love triangles. It seems as though there is drama all the time. With boyfriends, girlfriends and what not. There was one time in the show where two best friends were out with their boyfriends, or guys they liked. Lauren’s best friend hooked up with Lauren’s guy and then lied to her about it. This show is about the daily lives of a bunch of regular high school students. It’s amazing how much they are like our school and people living around here. It’s almost as though everyone goes through the same problems with love, and the same issues like in The Hills. Another episode of The Hills was about Lauren and her ex-boyfriend Jason. They were in a relationship for a very long time, however, Jason had been sneaking behind her back with other girls. He ended up cheating on her with one of her classmates who had stabbed Lauren in the back. So Lauren happened to always end up getting hurt in the end and its all because of these love triangles.

a classic mix-up that I chose was #2 love triangles. I found an example of this classic mix-up on the sitcom Seinfeld. In one episode Jerry meets Keith Hernadez, the New York Mets player. Jerry and Keith become friends really fast and get along great. But then Keith ask Jerry for Elanes number and breaks his plans with Jerry to go out with Elane. Jerry gets jelous of Elane because she is going out with Keith and not him. I think thats funny because Jerry is acting like a jelous little girl and got mad at Elane for stealing his date.

I've watched many shows in my lifetime, and I have to say surprisingly, that it was very hard for me to think of something from a sitcom that pretains to one of these three categories. But I do remember one that sticks out in my mind particularly. South Park aired an episode once about the maury show and how it exploits less fortunate people. So Eric Cartman and Stan and Kyle decide to tape another body part onto butter's chin so he could go on the show and get sympathy money. It turns even more hilarious when everyone mistakes butters for a freak and the other freaks from the show go to his house. They soon discover that butters is perfectly normal, and was only on maury for the purpose of entertainment. This is when the "freaks" come after butters, and the comedy soars before the situation is resolved. Everyone mistook butters for a freak when he was really a normal 8 year old boy.

One of my favorite shows nowadays has got to be "Scrubs". This show has a lot of strange coincidences. For example, in one episode, a patient dies, and gives up their organs to other people. The doctors thought he died of a drug overdose, and they cleared the organs up. What they didn't realize was that the person had died of rabies, and all his organs were still infected. The people who got the organs all died. That isn't really funny, but it has to deal with one of the styles of comedy Shakespeare used. Another example is when one of the characters Chris is going out with Carla, then finds out another doctor likes Carla. This is an example of a Love Triangle, which Shakespeare used a lot.

The show that i have chosen for this comparisson is not really a love triangle but instead a "friendship" triangle. It was in an episode of Spongebob when the three main characters were in a bit of a sticky situation. It turns out that two of them, Spongebob and Patrick, wanted the other, Squidward, to be there best friend and their best friend only. So during the whole episode, Spongebob and Patrick were constantly trying to outdo the other in hopes that Sqidward would be their friend. In the end they are all friends allthough Squidward continues to be his normal grumpy self. This is a good example of a variation of Shakespeare's love triangle.

In the show South Park, Cartmen thinks he’s a ghost because no one will talk to him or show any sort of recognition of him at all. Really his friends were ignoring him because he isn’t nice at all. This is an example of mistaken identity. Not by people around him but by himself. He basically saves the day by saving a group of hostages, be believes by doing good things for the horrible things that he’s done he will get to go to heaven instead of being trapped on earth. He saves the hostages by moving things like a stereotype ghost would and the robbers who are keeping the hostages get confused by some physco kid throwing papers, waving around paper weights and pulling out drawers. It makes it funny because Cartmen is so stupid that he can’t realize that his friends are just ignoring him, it demonstrates comedy by demonstrating Cartmen’s own stupidity.

One sitcom that contains a love triangle is a show called South Park, where Cartman tries to find out who his father is. Cartman never really knew who his father was, and asked his mother, whom told Cartman to go talk to Chief Running Water.

Cartman went to go meet Chief Running Water, and acted as if he were the father. The chief then said that he wasn’t the father, and then sent Cartman to the next suspect, Chef.

Cartman went to Chef and against acted as if he were the father. Chef then said that he also wasn’t the father, and then sent Cartman to another person, Mr. Garrison.

Cartman then went to Mr. Garrison, who then said that he was not the father, and also stated that almost anyone in the town could be the father.

Then Dr. Mephisto, a scientist, then said he’d figure out who the father was by taking a sample of everyone’s DNA. The list of people contained Officer Barbrady, Chef, Jimbo, Ned, Mr. Garrison, Chief Running Waters, Gerald Broflovski, Dr. Mephisto, Kevin (a monkey), and the Denver Broncos. After several hours waiting and the anticipation building up, he finally said that…Cartman’s mom was also the father (stupid ending, yes).

This made me enjoy the show because I always wanted to know who Cartman’s father was. Also, I found it funny because of the jokes that were said during the show (Perverted and disgusting, like always). The makers of South Park also made the people wait until the next episode to figure out who truly was the father.

Another character in the show named Eric loves Donna but in part of the show Donna land Hyde like each other. Fez, another character in the show, likes both Donna and Jackie. It is very funny because everyone is constantly changing who they like. The characters never stay with one person in the show for a long time. Every character is constantly changing. It is also funny because the guys are constantly fighting over the girls. The guys make each other look bad in front of the girls so that the other guy will look bad in front of the girl they like. This show is an example of a love triangle between many people.

In the TV show "The Hills" you can find examples of a love triangle. Lauren movies to LA and is best friends with Hyde. But Hyde is in love with here boyfriend Jason who is trying to make her hate Lauren because Lauren hates him. Lauren has been trying to get Hyde to break up with Jason and realize how he is treating her. The thing is Hyde has to make a choice to either be friends with Lauren or go out with Jason. This makes the show more interesting because you have to toon in every week to try and follow what is going on and to see who Hyde chooses each week.

I found a large amount of strange coincidences occurring in the television show, “Scrubs.” This show centers around the lives of a small group of medical interns working in a bustling city hospital. During one of the episodes, the doctor, Elliot, diagnoses a man with severe, un-treatable cancer and gives him no more than 8 months to live. Surely enough, the cancer dissipates throughout his body and he survives the ordeal. Before discovering that he would survive the cancer, the man ended things such as relationships and his job. Nine months after the faulty diagnosis, the man returns to the hospital and sues doctor Elliot for malpractice. What makes this ironic plot funny is its ridiculous unlikeness and doctor Elliot’s unluckiness and reaction to the situation at hand. Perhaps Shakespeare included plots involving strange coincidences so that the reader may be given the opportunity to imagine what life would be like under unrealistic conditions in comparison to the monotone life the reader lives every day.

In the sitcom Dawson’s Creek, there is a love triangle. The love triangle is between characters Joey Potter, Pacey Witter, and Dawson Leery. Pacey and Dawson are both in love with Joey, and Joey doesn’t know what she wants. It is extremely difficult for her to make up her mind. There were six seasons of Dawson’s Creek. In the first season, Dawson and Joey first figured out their feelings for each other, and started dating at the end of the season. Joey and Pacey hated each other in this season. In season two, Dawson and Joey broke up because Joey needed time alone (but she ended up dating a guy named Jack, who ended up being gay). Then Joey wants Dawson, but he doesn’t want her. Dawson asks his best friend Pacey to make sure Joey is okay, but Pacey ends up falling in love with Joey. Pacey and Joey are together in the third season. Then they break up at the end. The fourth season is their first year of college, and no one in the love triangle is together. In the sixth season, Joey and Dawson are together in the beginning, but then break up quickly because Joey found out that when Dawson and Joey started being together, Dawson had a girlfriend in California who he was cheating on. Then towards the end of the season, Joey and Pacey date again. They realize that it isn’t working out, so they break up. The season finale of Dawson’s Creek is when Joey finally makes her decision. Both boys tell her that they love her, and she has to make a decision. She picks Pacey, and Dawson, although he’s heartbroken, is okay with it because he only wants Joey to be happy.
The mix-up lasted throughout the seasons of the show, and it was sort of like a cliff hanger to make me watch all of them. I wanted to know who Joey was going to pick. It was interesting. Some people can relate to a situation like this, which is what makes people like to watch. It is kind of funny, because it seems that no one’s heart is ever at the right place at the right time. At the same time, however, it isn’t funny because everyone knows that either one person or all persons are going to end up alone.

I noticed a love triangle within the show called "Seinfeld." Elaine aquires a new boyfriend by the name of David Puddy. They had just started dating and things were going well. Although, David's numerous pointless quirks had begun to cause Jerry to insult him. Jerry did this not only because he thought that David was a complete loser, but because he still had love for Elaine (they used to date). This is funny because all it does is cause tension between David and Jerry, and their remarks are hilarious due to their stupidity. This creates a long arguement between the three, but in the end Jerry gets Elaine to break up with him due to making her realize that Jerry would be the better guy. They decide to get back together after this, and the love triangle is officially broken.

I choose to write about "Mistaken Identity". In a movie that I have seen called Invasion USA, something involving mistaken identity occurs. In the film, a group of terrorist invade Flordia, and start killing a lot of people and blowing things up. Chuck Norris in the film plays an ex-FBI agent named Matt Hunter, and he is sent to try and stop the terrorists, because he once knew the leader of them. As the terrorists are blowings things up throughout cities, Chuck Norris is always there trying to stop it. Since he was always there, people thought he was one of the terrorists, and so the army is sent to look for him. Eventually they do catch Chuck Norris while he is watching, ironically, Invasion USA (a 1930's version) in his hotel room. Chuck Norris then breaks loose from them, and defeats the terrorists later in the movie. This then clears his name and identity from the crimes. I guess this is in a way a case of "mistaken identity."

I watch Gilmore girls, which has many examples of the "classic mix-ups" but more frequently of the three, it has love triangles. Years back when Rory was still in high school at Chilton, she was in love with her boyfriend Dean, and Dean was in love with her, but there was this guy Tristin who loved Rory. Rory's friend Paris likes Tristin, but he doesn't like her back. Kind of like how Hermia (rory)loves Lysander(dean), Lysander loves Hermia, and then Demitrius(tristin) loved Hermia, and Helena(paris)liked Demitrius. The show included humerous scenes with Tristin constantly hitting on Rory and Rory not knowing how to react, and also scenes with Paris being jealous of Tristin's love for her. Whoa, I guess that's a lot like the stuff Shakespeare wrote about.

In one episode J.D is in love with Elliot and soon that J.D is going to tell her that he loves her she is going out with someone new. It seems like Elliot likes him too but she thinks that they wouldn’t be a good couple. So far were never now they will be together to the show ends. So far they are best friends in the show.

One of the shows I watch is That 70’s Show. I suppose one of the “classic mix-ups" it has is the love triangles. For a good portion of the show, one of the characters Kelso is dating the character Jackie. They are one of those couples who break up frequently but then almost get right back together. Now a friend of theirs, who’s known as Fez, really likes Jackie. He usually does things to try to impress her and is constantly making fun of Kelso in someway. It adds a lot of humor to the show to see Fez doing these things, and how Kelso or Jackie responds.

In The Show King Of Qweens, It has many explains of of clasic mixups and love triangles. In One Of The Edposiodes it shows doug, and his wife, geting into talks about how to make them look better. Dougs wife descides to wear less make up and doug deoicdes to loss weight. Dougs wife begans to get alot more attion in work and doug doesnt. This is kind of like Midsummer Nights Dream because helena feels like shes just as good as hermia, but noone see's it. That is how doug feels by the end of the show.

In the show, ONE TREE HILL Lucas is first surrounded by two girls that like him. But he only thinks that Brooke likes him. As Brooke tries to get closer, Pagden feels hurt, but she can't explain to her best friend why. Pagden doesn’t want her feelings to get in the way of Brooke’s, even though she has strong feelings for Lucas and Brooke doesn’t really know that Pagden likes Luke. This is an example of an l<3ve triangle. What makes me so interested to the show would probably be the drama. What makes it funny would probably be the lessons that the characters learn each time they make a mistake.

All shows an T.V these days have atleast one of the three mix-ups that are brought up in Midsummer Night's Dream. If there wasnt mix-ups, then the show wouldnt be interesting or fun to watch. One show that i love and watch all the time, constantly has these problems in every episode. This show is The O.C. There always seems to be a love triangle somewhere. In one of the seasons, Seth Cohen has a decision to make between Anna and Summer. They both love him and want to be with him. However, he cant choose and the girls end up competing for him which brings humor into the love triangle. I can see Lysander and Demetrius competing for Hermia at some point in the play. There was also another love triangle in the O.C involving Johnny and Ryan. They were both in love with Marissa, and she could'nt pick between them. The O.C had a mistaken identity as well. Julie Cooper starts dating a man that she meets. She later comes to a surprise that the man who she was falling for, was her daughter's ex boyfriend's father! Im sure these mix-ups happen in every show and i like that we can relate them to this play.

In the sitcom That 70's Show there is a love triangle. Jackie is loved by Fez, and Jackie loves Steven. It is very unfortunate that none of the lovers get the person that they want. In A mid summers night dream hermia loves lysander and lysander loves hermia. But demetrious loves hermia also, and to complicate things even more helena, hermia's very jealous friend, loves demetrious. Hermia is kind-of like Fez in That 70's Show. Helena as well as fez so not get the person they love but still love them... Helena's love demetrious ends up getting a spell cast on him to make him fsll in love with demetriious but that does not happen in the show. :)

I remember in a friends episode i saw. Joey fell in love with Ursela. Pheobe's identical twin sister. But Ursela didn't love Joey, but Pheobe liked Joey. Ursela told Pheobe she didn't want to be with Joey anymore, so since they were identical sisters Pheobe pretended to be Ursela and broke up with Joey for her. This shows shakespseares mistaken identity and love triangle methods of comedy.

The show I related to A Midsummer Night’s Dream is Sponge Bob square pants. The episode is a love triangle in a way. Sponge bob pet Gary switch owner to Sponge Bob best friend, Patrick. Sponge bob is depressed because Gary leaves Sponge Bob to go to Patrick. He then gets made at Patrick and fights him to get Gary back. In the end Gary goes back to Sponge Bob and the love triangle is over. “The end”
